Both are correct but "met with" is American English.

In American English, both are in the vernacular and are grammatically correct. However, depending on the situation they refer to, one is more applicable than the other.

"I met Peter," is better used in a situation of introduction, when two persons meet for the first time. On the other hand, "I met with Peter," implies getting together for a purpose after an introduction has occurred, and is more applicable to a situation in which the persons already know one another.
